About
Solo Houses is an immersive architectural destination beside the natural park of Puertos de Tortosa-Beceite in Matarraña, two hours south of Barcelona. Widely considered as some of the most extraordinary homes in the world, Solo Houses are rental houses designed by architects at the avant-garde of the field embedded in a 200-ha natural setting.
An ongoing development, Solo Houses constitutes a collection of holiday homes that redefine architectural experience in dialogue with the majestic landscape. So far, houses designed by Pezo von Ellrichshausen and Office KGDVS have been built, providing a one-of-a-kind architectural retreat and inciting discussions around contemporary design.
The project was started in 2010 by Eva Albarrán and Christian Bourdais, who commissioned some of the most relevant architects working today to materialise their design philosophy in a holiday home, with no creative brief or constraints. As a result, Solo Houses is a cultural destination acclaimed by critics, in which luxury is defined by design qualities and a respectful approach to the surrounding landscape.
With the objective of promoting and preserving the natural beauty of the site, besides the two energy-self-sufficient homes, Solo Houses also comprises Venta d’Aubert, an organic winery founded in the 1980s, and the open-air Solo Sculpture Trail.
Developed by Albarrán Bourdais, the founders’ art gallery, Solo Sculpture Trail features artworks by renowned artists across hundred-year-old vines, olive grooves and oak forests. Albarrán Bourdais has locations in Madrid and Menorca and is known for commissioning ambitious exhibitions and programmes that reach beyond the confines of the art world.
Thoughtfully furnished and equipped with complementary electric bikes, Solo Houses are at the footsteps of an array of picturesque medieval villages and hiking and cycling routes across the unexplored nature reserves of Matarraña.
